What Are Spinal Discs?
Spinal discs, also known as annuli fibrosis, are thick ligament-like outer rings that attach to the top and bottom of each vertebra. They provide shock absorption, they protect the spinal cord and ensure flexibility of the spine.
An spinal disc contains a jelly-like substance called the nucleus pulposis, which is primarily made up of water. The nucleus provides shock absorption and acts as a fulcrum to direct the movement of the vertebrae.
It is vital to stay physically active and exercise regularly to help prevent disc problems. Make a conscious effort to maintain correct posture when you sit, stand, liedown, work and exercise.
When lifting objects, make sure to bend your knees, keep the object close to your body, keeping your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back! Never lift an object by bending and twisting. You’ll only invite a back injury.
