The most important lessons are often taught to us by observing the simplest of creatures in nature. We have all seen how squirrels spend much time and energy in spring, summer and fall preparing for winter. They gather up food and put it away for the winter.
Okay. If you’ve grown up here in Southern California maybe you haven’t observed this. But for most of the country, it’s true! Take my word for it.

The lonely squirrel doesn’t end up with too little food for the winter because he saved up during the good months. And, not only that, he would never think of depleting his food and then borrowing from his neighbor squirrels (with the intention of paying them back later). The squirrel knows he would eventually be in trouble with this attitude.

Why can’t our government and our banks get some help from our squirrel friends. If we keep borrowing – eventually the “nuts” are gone and we have to “pay the piper.” This is always true.

The same can be said for health. You see, you have a health “store” – just like brother squirrel has. You make deposits into your store every time you 1) get a spinal adjustment, 2) eat a nutritious meal, 3) exercise or 4) practice stress reduction.

Conversely, you 1) refuse to get regular spinal adjustments, 2) eat unhealthy foods, 3) fail to exercise at least 20 minutes a day and 4) allow stress to adversely affect you.

Are you making more withdrawals than deposits to your health account? if so, your account may soon be bankrupt – and you may need a “bailout” from your health care provider.

The squirrel story should not be ignored! make regular deposits in your health account and avoid a long hungry and unhealthy winter!

I was eating lunch yesterday at one of my favorite cafes in Ventura, when I overhear a lady at the next table say “My back really hurts – I caught a draft in my back by sitting near an open window!” Oh my, said her friend, and promptly reached into her purse to produce her large bottle of Extra Strength pain reliever to help her friend with her back pain. “I always carry these with me for my back pain” she exclaimed.

I honestly didn’t know that these old wives tales were still around and still believed. We’ve all heard statements like this before – perhaps you have even used them in your conversations.

But really, how much sense does it make to say “You caught a draft” I can visaulize a good cartoon of someone with a catcher mitt sticking out of their back – to “catch” that draft as it wafts by.

What about the similar phase, “I caught a cold”. How do you catch a cold? The phrase makes it sound like you would actively go out looking for a cold virus to snatch on to it and “catch” it. How absurd!

In reality, we don’t “catch” a cold virus, or a bout of back pain – WE EARN THEM!

Yes, you “earn” your back pain from all the accidents and injuries that you have had in the past, the lack of exercise and the poor dietary choices we make. The same is true of “catching a cold”. We “earn” the bold by not getting enough rest, or exercise, being stressed out, eating improperly and not keeping our nervous systems operating properly (meaning not getting regular spinal adjustments which removes nerve pressure from your nervous system so your body can operate at full function).

The next time you say, or think, I caught a draft or a cold, think about it! What did you actually do to earn it? If you are ready to take care of yourself, it is vital you get a spinal adjustment to remove nerve interference.
